Unruly Hair In Winter

Unruly hair in winter can be very frustrating.  The rain and wind tend to be our worst enemies and many of us shudder when we come inside and finally get to the mirror.  This is when the real battle begins.... For many of us, a typical morning would be to shower and wash our hair.  From here, we load it with product to assist our styling method and then progress to spray heavily with a super strong hairspray or smooth over some kind of “wind resistant” cream.  Sound familiar?

It came to me recently, while I was working in Wellington (a most unforgiving storm hit while I was there), and visited the ladies room to re-groom myself for my next appointment, the magnitude of this problem.  I could barely get mirror space because of the number of my comrades trying to tidy themselves up too.

While quickly running my fingers through my hair, two of the women commented to me how easy it was for me to do my hair.  I watched for a moment as others were fighting to get brushes and combs through their hair before applying yet another helping of spray or some other type of finishing product.

This observation has lead me to write this in the hope to save these and many other women from the battle of wind torn or rain raged hair.

The first trick is to simply use a shampoo and conditioner suitable for winter conditions.  By this I mean use a hydrating shampoo and conditioner.

By feeding your hair with moisture during winter, the hair “slides” over itself easily and therefore reduces tangling.

Next, many people use far too much product.  The reason my hair was so easy to put back into place is because I use a light hold gel before blow waving my hair.  Once again, when I get caught in the wind, I don’t have a ton of product to battle with and my hair is not tightly tangled.

Last but not least, I use a humidity resistant hairspray to help hold my hair in place.  There is a distinct difference between humidity resistant sprays and lacquers.

Humidity resistant sprays hold the hair extremely well without the stickiness of other sprays.  This allows you to comb up your hair easily if you ever get caught in the rain.

For best results, try to dry your hair off as best you can and then restyle with a brush or even your fingers.

The products I recommend to use are from the NIOXIN range.  I suggest the NIOXIN Cleanser and Scalp therapy as your shampoo and conditioner.  These with give your hair that much- needed hydration over winter.

For styling, I suggest either the Bodifying foam or Liquid Sculpting Gel for volume.

Alternatively, if you are looking to tame your locks, I suggest either Pure Shine Gel or Reflectives Styling Gel.

For hairspray, all of the NIOXIN sprays are humidity resistant and offer a selection of holds, from Regular though to Power Hold.

I sincerely hope you try these tips.  I’m sure your life will be made a little easier.
